A Scientist’s Dream?

They say that discovering new worlds which are habitable is something most scientists can dream of. Well, for me that dream has come true on most levels, but again I find myself doubting the thought of having those dreams, as once more things aren’t as sugar-coated as we love to imagine them. Although I find myself becoming curious to the different new minerals and materials I have never heard of or otherwise are not used in this fashion, it is clear that I feel that the presence of me, my family and my friends are not wanted on these planets, seeing as we’re under constant attack. You can say that the situation has been so desperate that we are forced to co-operate with an army that belonged to one of the worst tyrants this universe has ever known…

And yet… these aliens appear to be an even greater threat overall than the troops of Frieza could ever pose, that much we can agree on. The Planet Trade Organization’s troops would have easy preys when they encounter Humans, but against these Metar creatures… it is clear that somehow the hunters have become the hunted, especially on this planet… I believe it’s called Al-Fadir… it appears to be one of the major settlements of the Metar.
The PTO engineers discovered a Metar Portal ring on this planet some time before our arrival. The idiots built their colony directly on top of the Metar Hive. Rather than trying to contain the Metar or at least set up defenses, the present soldiers apparently investigated these monoliths to determine their purpose, initially thinking they were inert. Several days ago, the Metar rapidly emerged and obliterated their base, curiously enough the Metar chose to spare certain structures instead of razing everything to the ground. The survivors of the original colony requested our aid to capture their Security Center.

Its anti-matter containment system kicked into an emergency stand-by mode when the colony power grid first failed, using stored power to maintain the field. It was explained to us that, in the SHORT term, this is a perfectly safe system, but it was designed to run only for MINUTES before full shutdown or reactivation. Any longer and the Trilithium Resin, a highly volatile type of toxic waste, begins to build up on the control rod.

Upon our arrival to this planet, we learned that this emergency system has been operating for three days. Trilithium residue is incredibly explosive and massively unstable… and it had turned the entire facility into a gigantic bomb, a device big enough to destroy the Metar Hive when properly prepared. However, we were tasked with the job of capturing the facility and reconfigure the anti-matter containment fields. With me being a scientist and perhaps the smartest woman of Earth, I was the one best qualified for the job in my own opinion, so the reconfiguring came down to me.

To say that would be an easy job, think again. We were under constant attack by the Metar and, whenever we managed to destroy one of their units, a fresh new one would appear from these strange portals, which would only mean that we had to take out the Portals to prevent more Metar from emerging of them to get some level of reprieve, but still…

The only thing that puts us at a disadvantage is that we STILL have no idea where Gohan, Videl, Krillin, #18 and Tempest have been taken to. Ever since they vanished on Orgolio, being abducted by the Hubrin, we haven’t heard any sign of them ever since. Most of them are confident that they are still alive, but how can we be so sure of that if we haven’t received any news from them or their abductors? We have no idea why they are being taken by them. Are they doing it for ransom? Are they wanting to demand something from us? But if that is the case, we should have heard of them by now… the whole situation is so tense… it brings back memories of when the Evil Majin Buu was rampaging across the planet and everyone thought that Gohan had perished in the ensuing battle, along with Vegeta. The only one whom held trust in her belief that Gohan wasn’t dead was Videl… it’s like a déjà vu that’s going on here…

This situation has pretty much changed the group as a whole. Android 17 is looking after his niece, Marron, and ensures he remains in close proximity of her to show her that he’s not going anywhere. Goku has also become a lot more serious, way more serious than I am normally used of him. It’s something that has even surprised Vegeta of all people. He said that he feels like he became a Super Saiyan for the first time all over again, where he was on the verge of losing his own temper or sanity even while fighting against Frieza…

Chi-Chi on the other hand seems unusually calm. I know for one that she definitely misses her son, but I think it’s because it’s the first time that she’s on the actual battlefield since a long time… the time period where we were being confronted by Buu doesn’t count here… Goten is gloomy, which bothers Trunks, who wonders if Goten is experiencing either a déjà vu or a relapse of his own… For some reason I can’t help to wonder the same thing… This is all so messed up…

At least I’ve been able to finish my job here; the anti-matter containment system has been reconfigured, I just had to reroute the building’s power grid through a stand-alone power generator and adjust the configuration to maintain stability of the field, otherwise the entire building would go haywire, taking me and everyone else inside or near it with it. Vegeta’s approaching me, apparently he’s wondering what the progress on my work is. He has Trunks with him, so at least I know that our son is safe. I still haven’t found a way to properly thank Trunks for saving my life when I got ambushed by the Hubrin on Orgolio… perhaps I can think of something once we’re back on Earth… assuming we’ll EVER get back there; I have a feeling we won’t get the chance to visit the home front anytime soon…
Again a short fanfic which is a tie-in with my Strange New Worlds serial.

And once more, guess the point of view of this fic here... ;)

Looks like we’re seeing things from Bulma’s perspective.
